What drives the cost
Equipment cost. An ATU adds a treatment tank with blowers, pumps, and often a disinfection stage, on top of the septic tank a conventional system already needs. This equipment is the core added cost over a gravity-only design.
Site conditions requiring the ATU in the first place. ATUs are typically required where soil or a small lot cannot support a conventional field at design flow. The same site factors that make an ATU necessary, tight soil, small lot, proximity to water, often add their own site-prep cost.
Electrical work. Aeration equipment runs on power, which means an electrical circuit run to the tank location, an added cost a gravity-fed conventional system does not carry.
