Septic Cost by System Type: Conventional vs. Alternative
System type is the single biggest lever on septic cost, for both installation and ongoing upkeep. The EPA states plainly that alternative systems, the engineered designs used where soil or site conditions rule out a simple gravity field, cost more than conventional systems.

What drives the cost
Conventional gravity systems. A septic tank and a gravity-fed drainfield with no pump, no electrical components, and no treatment stage beyond the tank itself. This is the baseline system, used wherever soil and slope allow it, and it is the least expensive type to install and to keep running because there is the least amount of engineered equipment involved.
Pressure distribution. Adds a pump and a network of small-diameter pipe to dose the drainfield evenly rather than letting gravity do it. Used where a field is oversized, oddly shaped, or on a slope; it adds a pump, a control panel, and an electrical circuit to the conventional design.
Aerobic treatment units (ATUs). Actively aerate wastewater before it reaches the drainfield, which lets the field be smaller and lets the system work on marginal soil. ATUs add mechanical parts (blowers, pumps) that need power and a maintenance contract, which is why the EPA singles alternative systems out as more expensive to run, not just to install.
Mound systems. Build a raised sand bed over the natural soil where the water table sits too high or the native soil is too shallow for a buried field. The sand itself, the extra excavation and fill, and the dosing pump required to push effluent up into the mound all add cost beyond a conventional field.
Sand filter systems. Pass effluent through an engineered sand or media bed for additional treatment before it reaches the drainfield, typically required where a site is near a well, surface water, or has very limited suitable soil. The filter media and its containment structure are the added cost over a conventional design.
