Drip Dispersal Septic Systems

Drip dispersal spreads pretreated effluent through a network of shallow, thin-walled drip tubing laid just below the surface across a wide, often irregularly shaped area, rather than concentrating it in trenches. It requires pretreatment (commonly by an aerobic treatment unit or sand filter) before the drip field, because the tubing’s small emitter openings would otherwise clog with raw effluent solids.

Because the tubing can be routed around obstacles and installed shallow, drip dispersal is often used on lots where a conventional trench layout is impractical — irregular shapes, mature trees to work around, or thin usable soil depth that a shallow system suits better than a deeper trench.

Dosing is typically automated and timed, similar to other pressure-dosed systems, and often includes a flushing or backwash cycle to keep the fine emitters from clogging over time. That makes drip dispersal one of the more mechanically involved dispersal methods, requiring the pretreatment stage, the pump and controls, and periodic filter and emitter maintenance.

The tradeoff for that added complexity is design flexibility: drip fields can often be fit onto lots, or worked around landscaping, that a conventional or even a mound system could not accommodate.
