Sand Filter Septic Systems

A sand filter system pretreats tank effluent by dosing it through a bed of engineered sand before it ever reaches the drainfield, producing a cleaner effluent than the tank alone provides. Because the effluent entering the field is already more treated, the final drainfield can often be smaller, or can work on soil that would not accept raw tank effluent directly.

Two common configurations exist: a buried sand filter, contained and lined so filtered effluent is collected and dosed onward to the drainfield, and an open or recirculating sand filter, which recirculates effluent through the sand multiple times for a higher level of treatment before final dispersal.

Sand filters are typically chosen where site constraints (poor soil, a small lot, proximity to sensitive water bodies) make it valuable to reduce the pollutant load reaching the final dispersal area, similar in purpose to an aerobic treatment unit but achieving pretreatment through filtration and biological activity in the sand rather than mechanical aeration.

Like other alternative systems with more moving parts than a conventional field, sand filters generally need more active maintenance and periodic inspection than a plain gravity system, since the pretreatment stage is doing real biological and physical work that needs to be checked.
