Inlet and outlet baffles are fittings inside a septic tank that direct wastewater flow below the floating scum layer, instead of letting it wash straight across the surface. A failed or missing outlet baffle is one of the more common reasons solids end up in the drainfield well before the tank is actually full.
The inlet baffle takes incoming wastewater and directs it downward, so it does not disturb the settled solids layer or the floating scum layer already in the tank. The outlet baffle does the same thing in reverse: it draws the tank’s middle, relatively clear layer out toward the drainfield, while blocking the scum on top and the solids on the bottom from leaving with it.
Older tanks sometimes used a simple tee fitting instead of a baffle, and both can degrade over decades — corroding in a concrete tank, cracking in others. A failed outlet baffle is a serious problem because it removes the very mechanism that keeps solids out of the drainfield, even in a tank that is otherwise not overdue for pumping.
Baffle condition is one of the things a pumper checks while the tank is open, which is part of why a thorough pumping visit is worth more than a quick empty-and-leave.

Modern tanks do, either as a formed baffle or a functionally equivalent tee fitting. Some older tanks predate consistent use of either and may need retrofitting.
