Drainfield Size Calculators: How the Math Actually Works

Type your bedroom count into any drainfield calculator and it will hand you a square footage. Useful, but only if you know what the calculator did, because the same house gets very different answers on different soils and under different state tables. The math underneath is one equation, and it is worth understanding before trusting any output.

Why calculators disagree

Because the inputs are jurisdictional. Design-flow tables, application-rate tables, and reduction credits are set state by state, so a generic national calculator is at best an approximation of some state's rules. A calculator that does not ask about your soil is guessing at the single most important input.

Common questions

Why do two calculators give different drainfield sizes?

They are using different state tables for design flow and application rate, and different reduction credits for chambers or pressure distribution. The equation is the same; the jurisdictional inputs are not.

Can I size a drainfield without a soil test?

Not finally. Soil application rate is the dominant input, and codes assign it from an actual soil evaluation or percolation test on the site. Anything before that test is an estimate.

Does a bigger house always mean a bigger drainfield?

More bedrooms raise the design flow, which raises the area, but soil moves the answer at least as much. A small house on tight clay can need more field than a large house on sand.

What is the reserve area a calculator adds?

Ground reserved for a future replacement drainfield, required by most codes on top of the primary field. It must stay clear of structures, which matters when planning a lot.
