Drainfield replacement is, for most failed systems, the largest single line item in a septic repair, because the field is the largest physical component and the one most constrained by the soil it sits in. Field size, current soil condition, and whether a usable reserve area already exists on the property are the main cost drivers.

What drives the cost
Required field size. Field size comes from dividing design flow (from bedroom count) by the soil's measured application rate. A larger house or slower-draining soil both push the required area up, and area drives excavation, pipe, and gravel or media cost directly.
Whether a usable reserve area exists. If a reserve area with suitable soil was identified and protected on the original permit, the new field can go there. If the reserve was never designated, has been built over, or does not test out, a new soil evaluation and possibly a different system type may be needed.
Soil condition at the new location. The replacement field is subject to the same soil-driven design rules as an original install: a percolation rate and water-table depth that no longer support a conventional field can force a switch to a mound or another alternative design.
Dispersal method. A conventional gravel trench, a chamber system, and pressure distribution use the available soil area differently for the same design flow, which affects both footprint and cost.
Site restoration. Restoring lawn, landscaping, or any surface disturbed by the excavation is part of the total job, not just the pipe and gravel work.
