Nitrogen Reduction for Commercial Septic Systems

In areas a state has designated nitrogen-sensitive, coastal watersheds, sole-source aquifers, and similar protected zones, commercial septic systems can be required to include enhanced nitrogen-removal treatment beyond what a conventional tank and drainfield provides, and both whether the requirement applies and which technology satisfies it are set by the specific state or local program.

Why nitrogen gets special treatment

Conventional septic systems treat effluent for pathogens and organic material well, but a standard tank and drainfield removes only a limited amount of nitrogen, and excess nitrogen reaching groundwater or surface water is linked to problems like algal blooms and impaired coastal and estuarine water quality. Because of that, a number of states and localities, particularly along the coasts and around especially sensitive water bodies, have designated nitrogen-sensitive areas with their own treatment requirements.

A commercial site's higher design flow relative to a house means it can contribute proportionally more nitrogen load, which is one reason nitrogen-reduction requirements come up more often, and can be stricter, for commercial and multi-family projects than for a single house in the same area.

Enhanced nitrogen removal is generally achieved through a specific advanced treatment technology approved for that purpose by the state program, layered on top of, or instead of, a conventional system, rather than through any change to a standard septic tank's own design.

Who actually designs and permits this

Commercial and other non-residential onsite systems normally require a licensed septic or wastewater designer, and often a professional engineer, and are permitted by the county or state agency that regulates onsite wastewater where the property sits.
