Septic Systems for Car Washes

Car wash wastewater is high-volume, carries detergents, oil, grit and dissolved solids well beyond typical sewage, and in many jurisdictions is not permitted to go to a conventional septic system at all without a specifically approved pretreatment design, most commonly an oil-water separator ahead of any further treatment.

Why this is not a scaled-up restroom design

Wash water carries detergents, road grime, oil and grit from vehicles, and the volume of water used per vehicle is large relative to almost any other commercial category on this list. Because of both the volume and the contaminant load, an oil-water separator, sometimes called a sand-oil interceptor, is the standard first step to remove free oil and heavy solids before water reaches any further treatment, whether that is a septic system, a sewer connection, or a water-reclaim system.

Whether a car wash is even permitted to discharge to an onsite septic system, as opposed to being required to connect to a public sewer or install its own dedicated treatment, is a jurisdiction-specific determination and is often decided differently than for other commercial categories.

Water reclaim is common industry practice

Many car washes recycle a significant share of wash water through on-site reclaim systems, which reduces the volume that needs treatment or disposal at all; that is a design and business decision made with the system's designer, not something to assume is present or absent on any given site.

Who actually designs and permits this

Commercial and other non-residential onsite systems normally require a licensed septic or wastewater designer, and often a professional engineer, and are permitted by the county or state agency that regulates onsite wastewater where the property sits.
